Effective Instruction

If you’re working on this step, the objective is to implement an evidence-based, standards-based curriculum with measurable objectives for all students.

Measure impact on student learning through formative and summative assessments — and don’t forget to reflect often and conduct self-evaluations so you are always improving in the classroom!

Month Action Items

Evaluate your program and instruction.

Deliver instruction in a way that meets the needs of all learners.

Take time to get to know your students.

  • Incorporate cooperative activities to help you and your students get to know each other.

  • Attend an extracurricular activity your students are participating in (e.g., music concert, sporting event, after-school program).

Ensuring Healthy Behaviors and Physical Activity

If you’re working on this step, the objective is to move beyond your classroom and take the lead in promoting school-wide wellness.

Ensure healthy behaviors and physical activity using a comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) and the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. This can be a big undertaking depending on the current school environment!

Advocacy

If you’re working on this step, the objective is to advocate for effective health and physical education at the local, state and national level.

Another component of advocacy is speaking to other health and physical education teachers who are not aware of SHAPE America, 50 Million Strong and the importance of health and physical literacy. To impact an entire nation of children, we’ll need to get all HPE teachers on board!
